"Let Your Style Bloom: A Four-Week Poetry Workshop"
This weekly, online poetry workshop is for poets at all levels who are looking to explore new styles and discover their authentic voice. Whether you're just beginning to write poems or have been crafting them for years, you'll leave with fresh techniques to help your poems shine — and a clearer sense of your unique authorial voice as a poet.
Together, we will explore and experiment with a wide range of approaches to writing poems, discussing how form, metaphor, symbols, and other experiments on the page can lead to surprising and delightful results within our work. We'll also study the unique and remarkable styles of poets such as Jose Hernandez Diaz, Danez Smith, and Naomi Shihab Nye. Each session will feature a discussion of style within one famous poem, followed by an exploration of different approaches to crafting our own poems through generative prompts that encourage experimentation and growth.
Writers’ League of Texas Discussion: Writing with the five senses
How do we paint vivid pictures for our readers? Lauren Brazeal Garza, author of four books of poetry and short fiction, will discuss how to translate an event, location, or idea through the use of imagery and our five senses; incorporating sight, sound, touch, smell, and even taste to immerse readers in our stories and poems.
Hay Festival Writing Workshop: Don’t Go Into the Woods at Night!
In this generative two-hour workshop, we will explore the global evolution of scary stories and the important functions they’ve served over time. We will also look at what makes a story scary, and why we are often drawn to horror as a genre. Finally, we will begin working on our own dark narrative based on a writing prompt designed to inspire creativity. Participants will be invited to read their work to the group.
